Dagály Strand Baths (Lido)

One of our office’s earliest commissions was the modernisation of the Dagály Strand Baths (Lido) and, in connection with the 2017 Budapest World Aquatics Championships, the preparation of the building permit and construction design documentation for the FINA Market event facility, delivered within a design & build framework. During the design process, the requirement to accommodate the FINA Market’s event function was introduced. Owing to the multi-phase implementation, a further challenge – alongside the objectives of renewal and reconstruction – was the preservation of the traditional elements of the Dagály Strand lido, a facility with long-standing and well-established traditions.

Throughout the works, the lido’s proven and popular features were renewed while being retained, including

• the 25- and 50-metre outdoor swimming pools,
• the butterfly shaped pools,
• the thermal pools and
• the Béke fountain

At the same time, the baths were expanded with new functions and facilities, such as medical and wellness services, a playground, summer camps, and more. Access to the new swimming arena is provided via a covered, enclosed connecting corridor. The landscaped green areas and sports courts of the lido were also comprehensively renewed; in addition to safeguarding the existing tree stock, a significant number of new trees were planted.
